Nonsense - just give him a pen to chew on and tell him his body will thank him.

Girl #1: So what ever happened with your sister’s ticket?
Girl #2: Oh, she's taking it to court.
Girl #1: You know what I heard (and she should tell the judge)? That if you are smoking and get pregnant you shouldn’t quit, because you will send the baby into shock.
Girl #2: Really? I'll tell her that.

I'm guessing it was for smoking in a restaurant or something, and the pregnant thing is an excuse to get out of it...

Isn't that always the excuse that trailer trash people use, is that "them rules" are wrong? Using this as a pretext for their rebellion, seems to be as classic as a fluffed mullet w/ mustache combo.

The funny part is that by the standard of moderates, the CPC is far more extreme than the NDP. The NDP has a progresive agenda to improve our society, while the Conservatives simply want to slash and burn what we currently have. I doubt that I will vote NDP, but I know sure as hell that I am never going to vote CPC.

8:31 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I concur wit 8:31. The NDP represent a far larger portion of the population than does the Conservatives. The CPC is nothing more than a self serving organization bent on improving the lives of only the wealthy (+ $200k household income). While on the other hand the NDP believes in lessening the tax burden for those wha can support it the least, the working and middle class.

Not at all. I was just questioning the whole "He is an intelligent, principled human being with a functioning brain." People with those qualities generally don't mistake their friends for quale. Especially when the mistake results in a gun being fired.

Don't forget that there's always a substantial bunch of people who vote strategically (Liberal) and not with their conscience (NDP), meaning that the NDP's share is bigger than it appears.

And don't forget 8:41, the CPC is the only alternative for the religious right, ergo they pander to them as well.

you know what's interesting about all this?
quitting smoking can actually cause the fetus to go into nicotine withdrawl. it's been studied at london health sciences by some of the leading toxicologists. they found some women who tried to quit found that the baby became a lot more aggitated until they started again. kind of like the "crack babies" seen in women who take anti-depressants during pregnancy. granted, it only happens to some women, and it's probably healthier than smoking, but it isn't a totally stupid thing to think.

You mean the Conservative Party of Canada, right? Because I don't think the Jesus people would be too fond of that other CPC...

Also, I would point out that, as a member of the strongly non-religious(well, non-Judeo-Christian, anyway) right, the CPC is also the only realistic choice we have...

2:10 PM

I'm going to state the obvious here because it badly needs stating. All parties are pluralistic in nature, i.e. they need to build alliances within various disparate groups. The Conservatives have the religious right (mainly but not exclusively rural) and strong fiscal conservatives as their base, but they also need middle class voters, suburban voters, and soft Quebec nationalists to build a majority. What you have described is a tension in any right wing party between possibly secular fiscal conservatives and the religious value voters (this is more evident in the USA).

The NDP has a mix of union workers (auto, public services, etc), intellectuals, envrionmentalists, hardcore socialists (like me), and typically younger voters. Since they haven't formed the government and most of these groups see eye-to-eye on issues, there tends to be less tension in this group, but it can happen (google NDP + the waffle).

The Liberals tend to be the largest tent, which explains their electoral success in part. They usually have Quebec voters (less so now), urban centres (larger now), catholics, immigrants, the maritimes, most of the Ontario suburban voters, and a mix of "business" and "welfare" liberals, that can flux to the Tories or the NDP. The Liberals have kept the coalition together fairly well, and still to a great degree have most of these groups in tact. But no party is a uniform entity, merely it has many elements that try to forge a governing coalition.

Thanks for your time.

7:41 - If you have ever cracked open the 9/11 report (availale in many book stores), you would be suprised to learned that the commission found that the Bush administration shouldered a significant part of the blame for the attcks. It found that the Bush administartion dropped the ball on tackling the threat of Al Queda and associates. Despite numerous reports, and warning of the possible treat, the Bush administration excerted little effort in preventing it from occuring. While Al Queda is to blame for the horrific attacks, Bush has nothing to gloat about.

What this fine public intellectual fails to state is that exit polls revealed that only a meagre 41% of conservative voters, actually wanted a conservative government. The vast remainder of conservative voters were looking for an alternative option over the Liberals. Therefore only an small percentage of the population actually support the Torys.

The funny / sad part is that many CPC voters actually have an av. houselhold income within range of $200k a year. If you remember, the vast majority of CPC seats come from Alberta, whereby income levels have gone through the roof thanks to the unreal resource sector. Skilled workers, working anywhere around the Edmnton area can easily bring home six figures a year. Therefore a couple could easily bring home $200K a year.

What is funny is that the only ridings outside of the Oil belt that went Blue in the last election are primarily lower income rural areas. The sad part is that these people are captivated by the redneck mentality of the CPC, and are unfortunately unable to see that they stand to gain very little voting tory.

Wow, really I mean it's interesting to know that it was entirely on them, being in power for what 8:15, around 9 months or so? Too bad Clinton wasn't there, if only he had those extra 9 months to put the puzzle together! Being the fool that I am who has never looked into this at all, I thought that the report mainly placed the blame on the FBI and CIA. I guess it isn't their job to combat terrorism though, the president should be on the case himself.

8:32 correct me if I'm wriong but the conservatives recieved 123 seats in the last election. Now Alberta only has 28 seats, so we come back to this math issue again. How exactly does 28 make up the vast majority of 123? Do the other 95 seats not count?

8:41 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

As a Poli-Sci nerd, I too have actually read the 9/11 report. What 8:33 possibly did not know is that it is in fact one of the President's roles to take steps to protect the country from terrorist attacks. After all the President has total control over all government resources, including counter terrorism and the military. Had key agencies not felt there was a significant threat, they never would have produced a number of breifings (as presented to the commission) that Bush apparently did not act on, and admits in his testimony that he did not remember every having read.

It's one thing to bring it up. It's another to blame terrorism, etc, for things that go wrong that actually have nothing to do with it, or use it to distract people from the falling dollar, changes to bankruptcy laws that make it even harder to get necessary medical procedures (and more than 3000 people die because of inaccessible medical procedures), dying because FEMA thinks they have time to play with when your city goes under mob rule after a storm...
You could probably argue that it's morally outrageous to exploit the deaths of thousands to serve propaganda purposes, but I bet you'll just call me a commie for (oh my god!) having an opinion not fed to me by CNN. because they didn't want their countries run by racist white governments, they should have no business asking [racist white governments] for help?

Yep, pretty much. Nothing Western countries can do is going to solve the problems of Africa. If we went in with a complete plan for overhauling the most fucked-up of their countries... that'd be neocolonialism (which we all know to be a non-starter). And as to just giving them money with no strings attached? Sorry, if I'm going to throw my money away for nothing tangible, I'd prefer to at least get to set it on fire myself.

As you pointed out, 12:17, no Western country has clean hands when it comes to Africa. Whatever we do, we're going to get tarred as the bad guy for it. Pardon me for not rushing to cash in on that opportunity.

Seriously, do you think the international community would support toppling a dictator like Mugabe or intervening in Darfur? (Maybe for the first 90 minutes, right up until the first pictures of white soldiers killing poor black people start showing up on CNN.) How'd the USA fare in Mogadishu again? (Hint: not well.) So, that being the case, care to explain to me why the Americans (or anyone, in fact) should willing choose to jump headfirst into a similar debacle?

2:34 PM

This only goes to confirm the fact that George Bush only cares about white people. If he doesn't care the least bit about black people in his own country - who are able to vote against him - why should he care about black people elsewhere?

^yeah, because since Kanye West said "George Bush doesn't care about black people", it's clearly true.

Unfortunately, direct conflict between the US and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (i.e. China, "Russia", and other "former" Soviet states) is very likely to happen well before 2040. Also, it is highly unlikely that the US will have much of a chance.

1:52 PM

1:52 you make a good point. There is little chance of the United States taking on an over populated quasi-communist state, with the US military in its current state of disrepair.
The only solution is to frighten the bejesus out of rogue states by: reinstating the draft, putting the sac bombers back in the air, and voting for some unstable old guy to lead the crusade. Might I recommend either George W. Bush for 2008 (he has only been elected once) or Ronald Reagan Jr.(he maybe gay, but that name will never lose its cache).
