Hear that? That's the sound of Puccini rolling over in his grave.

Girl: It was good, but there wasn't enough dialogue. There was too much singing.

I don't think this comment is very funny. Why can't she think there's too much singing? Obviously she knew that there would be some, but at some point, it becomes too much.

its a MUSICAL. Musicals contain MUSIC and SINGING. People are too used to the Hollywod version of musicals, consisting of 2 songs randomly placed and serving no purpose, that they can't recognize a good, proper musical when they see one.

I guess some people do not understand the whole musical genre of film. It's a shame.

I heard the same thing said after leaving Chicago! People, "musical" means that there will be singing!

yes of course there will be singing! but it doesn't mean the dialogue should be crap(which it definitly was in RENT... it should not of been made into a movie) (chicago on the other hand was really good)

The ONLY reason the dialogue was crap was because it was supposed to be SUNG. Most of the dialogue were the exact lyrics to sung parts of the Musical Rent.

The biggest problem with Rent (and it's not that big in the grand scheme of things) is that there wasn't ENOUGH singing.

Here's a hint. If you don't like singing DON'T GO SEE MUSICALS!!!!!

(And if you don't know which ones are musicals, then LOOK INTO them before going to see them. Also, as a big hint, DON'T GO SEE "THE PRODUCERS" this christmas, It's a MUSICAL!)

Here's the difference between Rent and, say, Chicago: Chicago was made as a musical; Rent was made as an opera (i.e., ALL dialogue sung). It was based on Puccini's La Boheme (hence the title of this post, I suspect). If you don't like too much music in the shows you see, don't go to shows that were originally operas! I mean, it's just common sense!

RENT should not of been made into a movie, or it should of all been sung and had no dialogue.. which still wouldn't of made it very good. to get back to the original comment.. it wasn't that funny and it wasn't that stupid either, obviously she knew that it was going to be a musical. they just either needed to make the dialogue stronger, or have them sing the whole thing.. which at least would of made it more interesting.. my guess is RENT wont be winning best picture thats for sure. and do people normally do research before they go to see a movie?

nobody has the time and effort to be a loser and look into movies and know that it was based on an opera, cuz for normal everyday people, we look at a commercial and we go see what looks good. you guys think way too much into this crap.

Was that last comment some sort of ironic joke?

I really hope it was.... Or I may have just lost the last shred of hope I have for humanity, and if it wasn't a joke... please please please stop defending "normal everyday people", because you clearly don't fit into that category.

Okay, even if "normal everyday people" don't do research into the movie, they should at least know the BASIC GENRE before going....I mean complaining about the singing in a musical is like saying:

"I went to see Saw II, but I didn't like the blood"

Honestly, naturally no one is going to research the movie before seeing it. But if they go to a movie without bothering to read a review or even a plot synopse (available easily on the EXACT SAME WEBSITES YOU GET SHOW TIMES ON) Then you can't complain.

(Also, the RENT trailers had friggen SINGING in them.)

i think everyone knows that rent is a musical and expect it to be all singing. i think the main argument should be.. why the hell was there crappy dialogue at all in the movie? becuase it should of been sung.. or re-vamped for the movie viewing audience and made the dialogue a little better.. cause it stunk.. hence.. if it is supposed to be sung.. then that proabably would of been a good idea to do so.

to those of you who are shocked by people who don't look into movies before seeing them: i don't see the issue here. i mean, some people like to look into it, some people prefer the surprise, the ability to get lost in something completely new to them.

personally, i can become interested in seeing a movie by the trailer alone, and i don't want to go read a review, synopsis, or otherwise, before seeing it. at most, i may take very general reviews, as in 'it was good' or 'it was bad', but even then, i'd prefer to make my own decision.

sure, going to movies blindly does mean i've seen some bad movies.. but it doesn't matter if you've done all the research, read all the reviews, all the plot summaries, taken your mothers advice on it or whatever else you want to do beforehand, i'm certain you didn't enjoy every movie that you thought you would beforehand, or alternatively, that you wouldn't enjoy a movie that you thought you wouldn't.

But at the same time, even if you don't know the reviews/plot of the movie you go to see, don't you at least know what kind of movie it is?

I mean, would you go to see "Madagascar" and then complain that it was a cartoon?

I hope not.
