9:57 - I find your comment, with its homophobic implications, to be absolutely disgusting. Comments using homosexuality - an essential component of many people's identity - as an insult does nothing but undermine the LGBT quest for true equality. I encourage you to think before you speak in the future.

Regards,

An angry exec of PRIDE Western

Molesting children is an essential component to many people's identity, too. You don't see them running around expressing how people undermine their quest for acceptance when you call them "perverts." Accept who you are, but don't make me accept you. If somebody on the internet makes you angry, being gay is the least of your problems.

10:30 - you are a coward to hide behind an anonymous name on this site. If I knew who you were, I would promptly report you to the Vice-Provost for student affairs for making hateful, homophobic comments. You are in breach of the Western Code of Student Conduct. Comparing the struggle of members of the LGBT community for equal rights to child molestors? You DISGUST me.

12:22 - YOU are a coward for wanting to resort to censorship because you don't like the views expressed by another person.

If you disagree with someone, DEBATE them, or ignore them. Don't go running to the authorities looking for repression of views that you happen to find offensive.

6:48 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

6:48 - Would it be censorship if someone had a problem with someone spouting off hate to a different minority group? Like a racial group or women? Hate not acceptable regardless of which group it is aimed at.

10:30 wants to insult, not debate.

10:41 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

To answer your question: Yes, it would be censorship- and who, exactly, is to define "acceptable"?

Living in a free society means being insulted from time to time.

I do not justify such remarks- I find them distasteful- but I do not have the right to silence them.

I see nothing wrong with saying that an Ivey student would turn this into a gay porn site. I might come here more often if it were.

3:32- Actually, it WOULDN'T be censorship. Free speech is to protect those who have something valid to say (whether we agree with them or not).

"Hate Speech", or speech which is used solely to insult/propagate hate does not fall under free speech laws.

12:25 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

12:25 - thank you for your support.

People should have free speech... to the point that it doesn't seriously offend anyone. It's like how I have the right to swing my fist so long as it doesn't make contact with your nose.

Any speech that insults the LGBT community should be considered for what it is: hate speech.

Frankly, I think that proud gays and lesbians will always be treated as a second class until will criminalize any sort of hate speech directed toward them. In fact, PRIDE Western supports proposals that would require a mandatory fine (of say, $50) for bigoted individuals heard using the word "gay" as a perjorative. I think people would think twice about saying "that's so gay" if they were slapped with a fine every time they used it.

Secondly, I think people who use their silly superstitions (religion) as a shield for their heinous words should be harshly dealt with. I know several gay LGBT rights organizations are actively seeking to bring to justice clergy who preach messages of hate in their sermon by having them charged under certain provisions of Canada's hate crime laws. I applaud these valient efforts to stifle the flame of religious hatred.

I think that in order to have a truly free and open society, we need to make sure that the voices of those who slander the LGBT community are promptly silenced for their hate.

"to have a truly free and open society, we need to make sure that the voices of those who slander the LGBT community are promptly silenced for their hate"

How exactly is this free and open? I really do symphathize with your group, and I realize that people say terrible things which must be horribly offensive, but this is not a good way to go about anything. Also you cannot possibly represent the entire Pride exec so should you really be speaking for everyone and saying things like that? It appears to trivialize your group even when they do actually have an important message to spread.

.....

Utter Nonesense.

(1) free speech SPECIFICALLY means the right to say things that are seriously offensive- if it didn't, there would be no need for it.

(2)insulting someone is not the same as punching them- one violates physical security- the other only creates bad feelings. Unless speech specifically threatens violence, it is not a fair analogy.

(3)"insulting a community" could mean anything to anyone.

For example calling religion a "silly superstition" is an insult to all kinds of people.

Suppose (without endorsing the statement) that a person said
"being gay is a silly habit"- is that hate speech, whereas calling religion a "silly superstition" is not?

Where do you (or anyone)get the authority to make such distinctions?

(4) If you can fine someone for using a term that is insulting to geys, would this same logic apply to (for example) insulting mormons, Evangelicals, catholics, conservative muslims (all of whom may have problems with gays) or for that matter, short people, fat people, or people from, say, Woodbridge? or New Jersey?

You assume an authority to make distinctions that you do not have.

I'm sorry if someone has made cruel remarks to you before. But hurt feelings don't justify censorship.

There is no right not to be uncomfortable.

For example:

"I think that's lame...it's so gay"

versus:

"I think that Mormons are mostly stupid homophobic bigots"

is one ok, and the other not?

and if they are both NOT ok... how are they different from:

"I think that moronism is wrong"

3:31 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Oh, I get it. It's ok to make fun of religious people but not gay people. It's ok to spread hate about any group but gays. Thank you for your insight.

You're worse than the people you're trying to lecture. How much respect has PRIDE Western lost because of your hypocritical comments?

10:30 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I can't believe the degree of intolerance the preceding comments show! Wow! What a bunch of homophobes you all are.

First of all, yes, it is okay to mock religion but not the LGBT community. Religion has been used for centuries to persecute and murder innocent gays and lesbians, and we should call it out for what it is: a culture of hate. Now, on the other hand, the LGBT community are VICTIMS. I find it ironic how so many people have this sick notion that blaming the victims is okay. Mocking religion needs to be seen as socially acceptable given its inherently backward and hate-promoting nature, but mocking the LGBT community should be treated for what it is: a hate crime.

3:23 - to your second point: that's the thing, these comments DO promote violence. Saying things like "that's so gay" only serve to dehumanize gays and lesbians, thereby making it easier for their attackers to justify their vile actions.

10:30 - PRIDE isn't about respect, it's about fighting for the fundamental human rights of proud gays and lesbians everywhere, and ensuring that those who speak out in opposition of these human rights are silenced using the full power of the law.

^What nonsense.

Where do you get the right to determine who is the victim and who isn't?

How do we determine how rights are to be expressed in the law? Is it now a crime to hold a different view of rights than you do?

Moreover, where do you get the right to determine which speech constitues hate and which doesn't?

Your assertion that religion should be mocked and that religious people aren't victims is simply historically ignorant.

Because you think religion should be mocked, is anti-semitism ok? Have Jews never been victims?

If mocking religion is ok, is it alright to say " the world would be a better place without orthodox jews??"

How is that NOT hate speech while "that's so gay" is?
Finally, there is nothing "intolerant" in having honest deisagreements about the nature of rights. People can respect differences without agreeing on matters of public policy.

Your goal is to criminalize differences of opinion. YOU (sir or madam) are intolerant.

6:07, your problem is that you can't see past advocacy for your own group and recognize that there is a larger principle at play here.

The same rules need to apply equally to everyone.

Is it either ok to mock everyone or mock no one. Make up your mind.

11:15 PM

Mocking pride western needs to be seen as socially acceptable since it is a breeding ground for religious hatred. The teachings of my religion do not include hatred of gays or anyone else. It's time for this pride bigot to understand that the right to be free from persecution based on religious affiliation and his/her right to be free from persecution based on sexual orientation are equally protected under the law.

11:05 PM

10:46, 11:15, and 11:05, thank you. When I first saw the comments placed by this PRIDE exec, I was extremely offended, and I'm not even religious. The absolute ignorance of other religions was absolutely baffling. Rising to the top does NOT mean stepping on anyone in your way.

PRIDE exec, I hope that you read this and understand the gravity of the things you said. Publishing those comments as a PRIDE exec also perpetuates that what you said is the belief of all of PRIDE. If this is so, then all my respect for PRIDE has been lost. There's enough intolerance at this school, as I'm sure you can vouch, so use your head. Start fighting for equality, not superiority over other groups.
